Devils and Dust and Long Walk Home

For reasons which I hope to blog about soon I was reminded of the following two tracks which serve as a reminder of Springsteen's songwriting genius (in my opinion of course):

So for no particular reason other than sadly still very relevant:

CMA Songwriters Series

The Country Music Association's critically acclaimed CMA Songwriters Series will return to C2C on 7 March 2019, at indigo at The O2.
Hosted by Cam and featuring Jimmie Allen and Ross Copperman, it will also introduce Travis Denning and Laura Veltz to U.K. audiences for the first time. The performance follows October's successful second annual CMA Songwriters Series tours in Europe and the U.K., while also marking the sixth London appearance for CMA Songwriters Series during C2C.

CMA Songwriters Series introduces new artists and songwriters through its intimate storytelling format. Audiences get to know the performers, their journey and the stories behind their songs throughout the two-hour seated show, as artists take turns performing their songs acoustically.

Each CMA Songwriters Series is unique - the one-off performances are unrehearsed, uplifting and heartwarming, leaving audiences feeling closer to the artists and the music.

Well that's the official blurb, I am not a Cam fan so hope hosting means just hosting. The others I know little about but sure to be a great night.

Shortest Tour Rumour Ever!

I for one didn't think so to be honest.

A crushing blow, but lets face it he has never rushed into anything so from Broadway to new album and tour was never going to happen.

Snow Patrol

Excellent new track from Snow Patrol, really looking forward to seeing them in Glasgow on 31 January.

The album has been out for a while I think.

Here is a classic

Bob Dylan and Neil Young

It is name that tune time at Hyde Park where Bob Dylan and Neil Young will co-headline British Summer Time.

Tempting as it is I am going to pass on this one, the tickets are outrageously expensive. I saw Dylan at the Armadillo and could barely identify a single track. Neil Young seems to become more and more self indulgent with 20minute guitar solos.

Springsteen Broadway

The forthcoming feature of Springsteen Broadway is bound to enthral his many fans, but in truth not so sure how many it will win over as new fans.

It wasn't a concert, yet wasn't quite a stage show or one man show. A bit of both. I was lucky enough to catch it and thought outstanding, but I am a huge fan to start with.

The stories were endearing but again as a fan you probably know it all already through his music and biography. Wonderful to see him again in an intimate setting (Edinburgh Playhouse was also special) here is the setlist:

(with Patti Scialfa)

(with Patti Scialfa)

The dropping of Mrs Springsteen is long overdue in my opinion (although as I have said before her solo stuff pretty good), she just grates with Bruce's vocal, overemphasises things and general is just a downer.

15 Tracks 2hrs 40mins and went bye in a heartbeat.

Cowboy Junkies - Mitchell Theatre

One of those horrible nights when there are two or three great gigs on. Very frustrating. However its been a long term ambition to see the Cowboy Junkies, so Old Dominion I am afraid had to be binned.

The gig was fantastic, suitably low key as you would expect and Margo Timmins was just sublime, her voice and delivery just incredible.

The key album is of course the Trinity Sessions and I was delighted to hear them perform Sweet Jane. Box ticked.

What Is Love For?

Its a great question! For one thing it is the title of an absolutely outstanding lp. Reason for blogging it that this is about to be released on vinyl for first time. Just in time for xmas or say a birthday!

I really think this deserves so much more recognition!

Del amitri - Barrowland

An absolutely superb gig from Justin and the band. The support simply superb in Trash Can Sinatra's, fuller review to follow but hard to pick a fault:

Steve Earle and The Dukes - Perth Concert Hall

Steve earle absolutely on blistering form at Perth. Been a while since I have seen him in with a full band and it was a real treat:

 The Firebreak Line
Walkin' in LA
Sunset Highway
 News From Colorado
My Old Friend The Blues
Someday
I Ain't Ever Satisfied
I'm Still in Love With You
You're the Best Lover That I Ever Had
Jerusalem
 Johnny Come Lately
The Galway Girl
Little Emperor
Acquainted With the Wind
Copperhead Road
Taneytown
Hard Core Troubadour
The Week Of Living Dangerously
Play Video
If Mama Coulda Seen Me
Fixin' to Die
Hey Joe
Dixieland
Ben McCulloch
The Girl on the Mountain

Sorry for the formatting on this! But a great mix of new and old. Middle section outstanding especially I'm Still in Love With You and Someday.

Great gig and well done to the festival to get an artist of Steve calibre to headline.

Bruce Springsteen - Springsteen on Broadway Performance from 2018 Tony A...

Guess this why I am going.

Eric Paslay

Eric Paslay is an amazing emerging talent. To my regret had too much beers before his gig in Broadcast but really thought he was superb.

When he comes back I am sure everyone who was there will be back again!

Kiefer Sutherland, Queens Hall Edinburgh

I admit I bought the tickets on a whim given that I love almost all his acting - but this was a sensational concert. Band was incredible and Kiefer was giving it all his moves. Great songs, couple great covers and an audience that was loving it.

I think this is roughly the setlist:

Run To Him

Sorry for the formatting!

The eagle eyed will notice the Lone Justice and Tom Petty covers. Ways To Be Wicked an absolute treat for me.

Thanks to Julie for coming along and making it an amazing night.

Luke Combs - Beautiful Crazy

Jessica Lynn - Crazy Idea - Official Music Video

Saw Jessica last week and although she wasn't my thing she is really energetic - really like this track.

The Rolling Stones and Richard Ashcroft - Murrayfield

A bit late in reviewing but I went to the Stones at Murrayfield. Wasn't sure what to expect and certainly wasn't expecting anything new....which is more or less what we were treated to.

Firstly Richard Ashcroft as a support act was a superb addition to the bill and as expected was absolutely superb - great band and a short but excellent set:

Set list as follows:

The Rolling Stones did more or less what you would expect but Jaggers energy was incredible. Highlights were many but Gimme Shelter in particular amazing.

The sound was excellent and a great stage set up.

I wont bother listing the set - no surprises in it really but a good day out.

Darden Smith - Two Dollar Novels

I hadn't heard this track until the Boo and Darden gig last week. I thought it was very much worth sharing.

Boo Hewerdine and Darden Smith - Glad Cafe, Glasgow

Was really delighted to be able to get along to the Boo Hewerdine and Darden Smith show in Glasgow recently. The Glad Café is a very small venue and I was pleased to see the show had sold out.

Like most I was there to here the duet tracks from the Evidence album which was released in 1996. A great lp and a little bit of a cult album I guess.

Unfortunately I cannot locate a setlist or any videos but the highlights were all there. Standouts were Little Victories, Evidence, Reminds Me a Little of You, Graceland, Patience of Angels.

A great night from 2 outstanding songwriters.

Bryan Ferry Glasgow

Interesting set list from Bryan Ferry - very light on "hits" and some real Roxy obscure material. Probably on the back of the debut album re-release. Really good concert and the band were superb. I would expect more hits at the Bandstand later this year if you happen to be going.

Eric Paslay Broadcast Friday 6 July

I don't know anything about him but he comes highly recommended. Playing in Broadcast, Glasgow and I am hoping for another strong Americana show. Here is the wiki blurb:

Eric Thomas Paslay (born January 29, 1983, Abilene, Texas, United States) is an American country music singer and songwriter. He has released one album for EMI Nashville, which contains the hit singles "Friday Night", "Song About a Girl", and "She Don't Love You". In addition to these, Paslay has written several hit singles for other artists, and has collaborated with Amy Grant, Dierks Bentley, Charles Kelley, among others.

And a couple of clips:

Southern Fried Festival

Once again an outstanding line up for Southern Fried Festival.

Steve Earle and Rodney / Iris for me for definite.

Spot the connection

Courtney Marie Andrews - May Your Kindness Remain

Courtney Marie Andrews has become a strong favourite of mine and I have been lucky enough to see her a few times.

This is a 4th lp and is getting outstanding reviews. I am really looking forward to hearing it properly. I know she is touring again this year so if you get the chance I would go and see her.

The Guardian had this to say:

"It’s one of the elements – along with the organ and Mark Howard’s spacious but focused production – that gives the album an unusual intensity. May Your Kindness Remain sounds forever on the brink of eruption – no shucks-we-were-drinking-beer-in-your-truck here. Andrews has said the theme of the album is coming to terms with depression, which you can sense without even listening to the lyrics.
Amid the misery, though, there is a search for moments of levity. This House is a long way from Madness’s house or Graham Nash’s house – “Empty cans on the counter / And the laundry’s never done,” Andrews sings, detailing the shortcomings of the surroundings, even as she insists “this house ain’t much of a house, but it’s a home”. May Your Kindness Remain confirms Andrews’ rise. It’s a brilliant record, proof that old forms can still be timeless."

John Prine - Hello In There

Have been talking about Alzheimer's and Dementia and this song sprung to mind. John Prine is an incredible songwriter and the 10,000 Maniacs also covered the track brilliantly.

And here is a wee bit of the great chocolate Genius:

Chris Stapleton - I Want Love (Audio)

This is a classic track - one of my favourites and great to hear Chris Stapleton version.

As a reminder here is the original with a superb video:

And a wee bonus!

Bob Dylan - Trouble No More

Ok love him or loathe him there is no denying that Dylan's trio of "gospel" albums are a pivotal moment in his career - and in my view completely underrated.

Each album has at least several great tracks and Shot of Love is superb from start to finish (its not totally a Gospel album though).

At 108 tracks I would suggest stick to the 2Cd edition - however I have to say this is an astonishing Live Document. I ordered the 6lp vinyl set which also has 2 CD's and this allows you to "autorip" the full 108 tracks - you don't get the concert DVD but it is much cheaper than the £140 box set! It does have the added bonus of the worst artwork in the planet! Anyway...

Dylan's voice is powerful, the band and backing singers just incredible. The live versions add so much to the studio ones I am amazed that a Live album was not released before now. The set also has a smattering of outtakes and rehearsal versions of unreleased songs.

Really worth checking out.

Phil Vassar ABC Glasgow 8th April

Another Day In Paradise (first Number 1)

I have to admit I know next to nothing about Phil Vassar - however a few of my friends going to see him at the ABC so as always happy to go along for some live music.

Lifting from his bio : Phil Vassar is one of a handful of musicians to have multiple hits as a songwriter AND as an artist. He has 10 Number 1s, 15 Top 10s, and 26 TOP 40s.  Top songs include Just Another Day in Paradise. Carlene, Six Pack Summer, American Child, For a Little While & My Next Thirty Years (Tim McGraw), Right on the Money (Alan Jackson), I’m All Right & Bye Bye (Jodee Messina) and many more. American Soul is Phil’s ninth album.

So he certainly has a good pedigree and I am looking forward to the gig and I particularly like this version of Another Day In Paradise and no wonder this was a huge hit.

Revolution In The Round, Classic Grand, Glasgow 29th March

I am really looking forward to this gig. It is a format I really like where several singers strip back their songs, tell some stories and join in with each other.

I must admit I don't know any of these artists but they come highly recommended. Kevin Morris regularly puts on these types of shows during his Glasgow Americana Festival, notably in 2016 where Roddy Hart, Boo Hewerdine Ben Glover put on a great show.

More recently at C2C in London I was lucky enough to be at the Songwriters show featuring Luke Combs, Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby and Kip Moore. This was an utterly superb show with every performer outstanding on the night.

Here is Luke Combes with One Man, One Guitar.

He can’t help being so good

Happy Valentines Day

That's it.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill

I am really struggling to work up any enthusiasm for this whatsoever. Oddly I am fairly sure I saw Faith solo back in the day and she was pretty good. But this just screams out "product" to me, totally fake and incredibly underwhelming as a principal act at C2C.

Morgan Evans and Kelsea Ballerini

Its quite odd that the mist you can find out about Morgan is that he is Mr Ballerini! So I guess good to lump them together so to speak.  I like what I hear of his work though got to admit I know very little

Kelsea on the other hand is absolutely a rising star and was absolutely superb supporting Lady A at the Hydro and I was really taken by her (not my normal thing), worth listening to for Peter Pan alone, outstanding track. First Time to me is also a superb song. Could do without their wedding video!

Elvis - The Searcher

Ok so how much more can they milk out of Elvis. And do you really need Take 6 of Suspicious Minds, probably not but hey ho.

This might be worth the cover alone which looks superb and the track listing is excellent. Thom Zimny has directed the documentary and so it is bound to be a first class film, Im looking forward to it. Ernst Michael Jorgensen is of course the Elvis expert and Jon Landau does not lend his name to anything other than perfect:

Vinyl list below:

Side A
  1. Trouble / Guitar Man
  2. My Baby Left Me
  3. That’s All Right
  4. Baby Let’s Play House

John Prine - Kelvin Bandstand

I was lucky enough to see the legend that is John  Prine at GRCH last year and he was outstanding.

The great news is that he is coming to the Kelvingrove Bandstand this August and even better its not just one of Glasgow's greatest venues (on a rare dry night) but he has the amazing John Moreland supporting.

This will be superb - worth the price for John  Moreland alone. He was the shining star when we went to Nashville. Saw him in Birmingham last year and he is outstanding!
